Regal Springs to use blockchain tech to trace tilapia
Regal Springs will begin using blockchain technology to support the traceability of its “Naturally Better Tilapia” range in Europe, making it the first aquaculture whitefish producer to do so.

Regal Springs will begin using blockchain technology to support the traceabilityThe project, according to Regal Springs, started last year, and is the first continuous aquaculture whitefish supply chain to use blockchain technology at scale. The technology – which is being developed through a partnership with blockchain technology firm SIM – will allow the company to have full-chain traceability, which will support unique storylines to be featured on the product in-store.
“Traceability is understandably a proof point for many who cannot see their food being produced at source,” said Achim Eichenlaub, CEO of Regal Springs Group. “By improving the level and type of transparency, we hope to see that Blockchain Technology will improve consumer confidence in the product. Consumers are more aware than ever of digital applications, so we will be interested to see how this evolves.”
The company is “at a very advanced stage in the Blockchain process,” according to Petra Weigl, general manager for Regal Springs Europe. “Blockchain is a logical next step for Regal Springs to authenticate the origin of our fish in a new way.”
